Late in the night at a home in Michigan, noises were leaving one mother frightened. Strange occurrences had been going on for weeks and she was determined to get to the bottom of what was happening.
It was not only affecting her but her whole family and pushing here further and further over the edge. The poor distressed women even began to accuse her fiancé for the unexplained activity. To find the answers she decided to record the late nights and finally had her answers. Was it her husband or something far more menacing? Armed with the recording she watched in disbelief. Nothing prepared her for what she found on the tape.
1. The Recording
Naturally, she prepared for what the recording could eventually show. The recording was performed using the baby monitor that they had set up in their daughter’s room, who had been waking up each morning with scratches on her head. The mother couldn’t believe that their daughter was scratching herself so something had to be up.
Concerned she continued to question her fiancé Joshua. He stated he had never seen or heard what his soon to be bride was experiencing. The mother was convinced he was up to something and went out of her way to catch him in the act, but once she watched the video she realised, the person in the recording was not her fiancé.
2. Who Are They?
The young couple were Joshua Higgins and Heather Brough. They were living together in a guest house owned by Joshua’s mother and Heathers soon to be mother-in-law, with their 1-year-old daughter Lily. Everything was going well for a year in their small house and the couple were, some would even say, living the dream.
But one day that all changed and the couple wanted to get out of the house as soon as possible. All starting with a routine waking up of Lily, when Heather found the scratches on her face for the very first time. She thought nothing of it at first but later confronted her fiancé.
3. Tensions Rise
Eventually, Heather had enough and approached her fiancé Joshua. She questioned him on the mysterious scratches found on their baby Lily. And also asked him about the strange sounds coming from the house at night, had he been the one making the noises.
The questioning caused some friction within their relationship as Joshua denied any knowledge of what was happening, and things began to become tenser and tenser. So finally, Heather decided to try and catch him in the act and recorded her daughter during the night. What she found was far worse than she could have imagined.
4. She Needed Proof
Understanding that this may be the end of her otherwise perfect relationship with Joshua, Heather could take no more and finally convinced her fiancé to purchase a baby monitor for their little girl. The monitor was then set up in Lily’s room at an angle and focused on the baby’s crib.
Joshua believed it was Lily herself scratching her face in the night as young babies often do with their nails while they slept. But Heather had been trimming her fingers for quite some time now as the scratching continued. Now the truth would be told and Heather was not ready for it.
5. What Was Seen
Heather had everything she needed to now find the real cause of her beautiful baby girls face scratches. The couple together bought a state-of-the-art baby monitor with night vision to see what happened in the night, so she could get to the bottom of this otherwise worrying mystery.
Camera set up the couple went to sleep to wake up the next morning and find their baby again with scratches on her face. It was time to check the baby monitor and see what had happened. However, when Heather had finally finished the recording, she was in a state of shock.
6. A Dark Figure
What heather saw was a dark shadowy outline of a man appeared on Lily’s baby monitor. Got him, is what she thought. She knew something very strange had been occurring and this proves Joshua had been up to something with Lily.
Joshua had been up and moving around in the middle of the night even going into his daughter’s room. But the only question left for Heather was why? Was Joshua pulling some sort of prank on his fiancé? Was he even aware of what he was doing or was he simply sleepwalking? Maybe that was why he denied it. She kept watching to see if the truth as in the recording.
7. Who Was There?
The image was of course not a perfectly clear one but the details of what occurs in the room are. The dark shaped figure walks into the room and past Lily’s crib. The little girl is perfectly aware someone else is in her room and out of curiosity or fear stands slowly to her feet using the side of the crib as balance.
The man too is aware of Lily’s presence but something else catches his eye. He turns towards the newly placed baby monitor and stares directly into it. Heather was terrified, as the man staring back into the video was not who she thought it was.
8. Fear
Heather’s heart stopped before panic quickly moved in. Hairs rose on the back of her head before her heartbeat kicked back in with an ever increasing tempo. The man in the video, Heather was now realising was a complete and utter stranger.
She could not believe her eyes as she slowly settled into the content of the recording. She continued to watch the rest of the recording and the mysterious intruder to see what he did in the depths of the night. He roamed around Lily’s room with no major intent. Sick to her stomach Heather’s began to question so many things but firstly, who was this man?
9. Realization
Heather now understood so much. The sounds she heard at night were not from a sleepwalking Joshua, but rather a stranger wandering through their home. She played the clip on repeat to see if she could find any more clues as to who this stranger was but one thing seemed strange in particular. The man seemed to look almost transparent.
And then Heather realized. This was no man. This was not even human. Her heartbeat began to climb higher once more as she had the final realization of what this figure was. She ran to tell Joshua. They need to get out of there, now.
10. Joshua’s Response
Joshua viewed the recording as Heather watched for another time to see if his reaction was the same as hers. He later said the recording was “chilling.” He said, “It was literally a chill down your spine, like that ‘what if’ factor, Is this what I just saw?” And no wonder.
As any father would be Joshua was also terrified for his daughter, “Seeing Lily’s face with the scratches was so bizarre and frightening.” Heather was also in shock for what their investigation had uncovered. “I was crying, I grabbed her (Lilly) jacket and ran over to my mother-in-law’s house.”
11. Who To Call?
Now it was not Heather on her own terrified of what she had seen, but Joshua now also understood her terror. He too now wanted to do something quickly to keep his family safe and with fear mounting, he decided to grab his family and get out of the house.
Short of breath he ran from the house with his baby girl and soon to be wife. Outside they ran through options of what to do and decided to first call the police. He was then referred to the Scientific Paranormal Investigations of Michigan. The conversation with them scares him even more.
12. Investigators Come To The House
Joshua was on the line with the Scientific Paranormal Investigations of Michigan. He was talking to a man by the name of Mike Priest, co-owner of Scientific Paranormal Investigations of Michigan.
Mike Priest and his team decided to immediately send out some members to investigate the claims Joshua and Heather had made. Once the team arrived and were given sufficient time to investigate and gather an understanding of the properties’ history, they made a conclusion Joshua and heather might have preferred not to hear. They said they believed the property, including the larger house where Joshua’s mother lived, was haunted.
13. Other Mysteries
If it had only been one strange occurrence in the house of Joshua’s mother, and the house of his young family, Joshua and Heather may have not believed the team who came into investigate. However, it was not the first occurrence on the property.
“I woke up to get ready for work one morning and it felt like someone was choking me,” Heather said in an interview after the recording incident. “It shook me to the point where I decided to buy our camera.” Joshua was a skeptic and so Heather often kept the weird occurrences to herself. “There have been times when I and my fiancé would wake up in the morning and I would hear an angry male voice — like someone had stubbed their toe,” she said.
14. Further Investigation
The supernatural investigators continued to search through the house to try and understand its secrets. “I definitely believe there is something going on at this house,” said Mike Priest during his checks and tests around the house of Joshua and his young family and his mother’s larger house.
Mike Priest and his partner spent a few days and nights in and around the property. They heard a whole host of strange and frightening sounds. From screeches and screams to what sounded like things dropping or smashing on the floor. The investigators definitely believed the property to be haunted.
15. Mounting Proof
After their initial investigation, Mike Priest and his team decided to leave the property but said they would return with more with a larger team and investigate or study the house for an extended period of time.
Their team hopes to find, uncover and understand what it was that was in the baby girls room that night. Speaking to the family afterwards, Mike Priest explained that he wanted to try and reenact the recording Heather had made of the supernatural being. Maybe this could bring some answers. But Joshua’s mother, Kris, had owned the property for over 11 years and had her own light to shine on the strange occurrences.
16. Previous Inhabitants
Kris explained a little later after the incident that when she bought the house a worrying story was told. “I was told when we bought the houses 11 years ago the lady who owned the property died in the main house,” Kris explained.
“It’s an old farmhouse and according to her niece… she fell down the stairs, broke her hips and laid there for a very long time before she passed away. She said that the guesthouse was built for the lady’s brother who was schizophrenic.” A slightly worrying and altogether frightening idea, but Joshua’s father had another theory.
17. A Troubling Past
Joshua’s father Jim is convinced that the ghostly haunting figure was a previous tenant of the guest house. Jim said, “The gentleman that lived here originally… (jumped) out this window, which is one story down,” he explained to the interested press and specifically a news channel from Detroit.
The theories of who the ghostly figure was now had two possible conclusions. Both paranormal in nature leading to one question for Joshua and Heather. What to do now? The couple very obviously decided it was time to get out of the guest house and find somewhere far away to keep their baby girl safe.
18. Leaving
Heather Joshua and their young daughter left the haunted residence out of fear of not only scratches to their baby but the fear of something even worse.“It scares us that it could do something else,” Heather said.
“It’s not physically just going after her, it feels like it’s going after us too…” Both Heather and Joshua agreed it made sense to leave the property and the spirit behind. The intentions of the spirit were also unclear. “This is a spirit. I don’t know what its intentions are, but at this point it’s becoming physically harmful.” Heather and Joshua explained in an interview.
19. Was It True?
Heather and Joshua posted their videos on social media so the world could see what they had recorded. It became a viral sensation and was snapped up by news broadcasters across the country. With millions of viewers being shaken to the bone after seeing the frightening images, the recording obviously had its own skeptics.
Many people said the figure in the video has some other simpler explanations instead of spirits and ghosts. And the couple was even accused of making this hoax themselves in order to raise capital for a new home. Now they had a reason and possibly the funding to get out of there. We’ll leave it up to you to decide.
